We love our Border Terriers. I think it is the best family dog in the world, but you have to know the background of the breed before you buy a Border Terrier.

You must a dog lover

You must love dogs to own a Border Terrier. They are very active and require a lot of attention and work. But in exchange you get the best friend in the world. They are loyal, loving, always glad to see you and  complete our family.

Border Terriers are hunters

They were bred to hunt foxes and their hunting instinct is still very strong. They will consider rabbits, guinea pigs, poultry, and even the neighbours cat as fair game. They have very strong jaws and big fangs and will kill a rodents in seconds. Our dog will destroy any dog toy within minutes. They should never be left unsupervised in these kind of situations. They were bred to kill foxes and are still equipped to do so.

Border Terriers are escape artists

Border Terriers are ground dogs. They have sharp claws and are experts in digging out fox holes, or digging out of your yard. You need a well fenced yard. They are renowned for escaping through the smallest gap if left unattended in a garden, even for a short period of time.

Border Terriers are very fast

You will not chase down a Border Terrier. They will run circles around you. If your terrier has not been trained to come on command, keep it on a leash.

Border Terriers require a lot of attention

Border Terriers thrive on their master's company and hate being left alone. This is true for all dogs. If left alone for an extended period of time, they will become destructive, especially young dogs, chewing everything they can find. We make sure they are in a secure area when we leave them at home. But never for more than a few hours. Make sure you have the time and resources to take care of your new puppy.

Border Terriers can be aggressive towards other dogs

You need to spend a lot of time socialising your young puppy. If they have not been socialized with other dogs from a young age, they can become aggressive towards other dogs.

Border Terriers are a hardy breed.

They are generally a healthy breed. They also have a high threshold for pain. They can take ruff treatment from small children without getting aggressive.

Border Terriers are excellent with small children.

Our dogs will never bite, snarl or nip at our toddler even when he takes their food or pulls their ears.

Border Terriers love their food

Border Terriers will eat until they drop. It is very important that you do not over feed your dog. We give each dog one cup of our home made dog food per day and watch their weight carefully. Strictly no tit-bits from the table. They love to beg, but if you love them and have their best interest at heart, you have got to keep them off human food.
Only give them big beef bones. Never leave a Border Terrier unattended with a bone, because they have strong jaws and will bite off big pieces and swallow it whole.
